Kenyan Wildlife and Safari
In Kenya, the spectacular wildlife is taken very seriously. With more than 80 major species of Kenya wildlife and over 1,000 different species of bird life. Kenya does recognise the vital importance of its visitors who bring with them, among other things, the much needed foreign exchange and the thousands of jobs this industry brings with it. It is no wonder that the kenyan safari is ranked amongst the top in the world.
Kenya is the leader in wildlife and environmental protection because of a deep-rooted sense of awareness that much of the fabric of Kenyan society is reciprocally linked with the wild. Tribes respectfully lived alongside the animals for centuries and the natural balance of nature ensured that both sides survived. It is only recently that Humans have started to encroach upon nature to such an extent that the balance of nature is threatened. Kenya spends a lot of time and money ensuring that the natural balance is maintained. Serious measures against poaching are in place and one of the most frequently seen bumper stickers on cars in Nairobi reads 'Only elephants should wear ivory'.
Historically, the big game hunters came to Kenya to shoot the 'Big Five’. Namely, the elephant, the rhinoceros, the buffalo, the lion and the leopard. Today, visitors come from all over the world to shoot them but through the telephoto lens of a camera. Although watching any of the sometimes graceful, sometimes rugged, wildlife with the awesome backdrop of the vast, open plains of Kenya is amazing, spotting the ‘Big Five’ is still a thrilling experience - and I’ve been there!
Some of the animals that you are bound to see in Kenya, just to name a few, are:-
